Chapter Fifteen
The alarms went off too early for either of them the next day. Janet was first into the kitchen and she fiddled with the coffee pot until Sallie Lee walked in the room. She put a cup of coffee on the table for her and watched while Sallie Lee poured in half and half and began to stir.
“I should go,” Janet stated carefully.
Sallie Lee had not slept well. She kept dreaming about the words, “I can’t finish,” and then waking to the memory of Janet’s soft skin. “Don’t even start that,” she snapped at her. “I said last night to forget it. I mean it.” Sallie Lee pulled a mug off the cup tree and handed it to Janet. “Please stay,” she said softly.
Abashed, Janet stepped to the counter to pour herself a mug of French roast. She sipped it while quietly watching Sallie Lee’s every move. There was a graceful economy of movement in the way Sallie Lee doctored her coffee to her satisfaction and moved around the kitchen, wiping counters and emptying the dishwasher. Even though the circles under her eyes testified to her poor night’s sleep, she was not acting angry or frustrated.
Janet kept up her watchful attitude for the drive in to work. She was confused that Sallie Lee wanted her to stay even after she had behaved so poorly. Even now, all she could think about was the feel of her body under her hands.
Things were a bit strained as both women tried to navigate around each other in the small space of the diner. It did not help when Della came in to find the two women not talking to each other and hardly looking each other’s way. It was evident to Janet that Della immediately jumped to the conclusion that Janet had done something to hurt Sallie Lee. It was nerve-wracking that every time Janet looked up, Della was glaring at her. Janet could not really blame Sallie Lee for not correcting Della’s assumptions.
At the close of business, the two women returned to the Hybart house. The drive home was as quiet as the drive in to work.
After Sallie Lee set her keys down, she walked into the kitchen. Janet followed her and finally spoke. “I think I should leave,” she repeated quietly.
“Look, I am not going to go through this with you again. You’re welcome to stay here as long as you want. I want you to stay.” Sallie Lee bit her lip. “Please stay. I’d feel really guilty if what I did made you leave.”
“What you did?” Janet was puzzled. “I thought you were mad at me because of what I did or, more accurately, what I failed to do.”
“No, I’m not mad at you. I’m pissed at myself for making you feel bad about not doing what you are obviously not ready to do.” Sallie Lee walked to the refrigerator and pulled out small bag of key limes from the crisper. “I made a serious mistake last night. I assumed you were at the same place I was.
